How Can We Assess Children's Spanish Learning?

Every child learns at their own pace. When learning a language, as in any educational process, it is important to recognize what children have learned, respect their individual learning timelines, and take their needs and abilities into account.

At Petit Español, we believe that assessment is about more than checking whether a child remembers specific vocabulary or language concepts. It is also an opportunity to observe how children understand, use, and connect what they have learned, recognize their progress, and identify areas they can continue to develop.

That is why our assessment resources take into account not only the Spanish content covered at each level, but also a fundamental aspect of children's development: their literacy journey.

Why Is It Important to Respect Each Child's Literacy Journey?

When assessing a child's Spanish knowledge, it is important to distinguish between children who have already developed reading and writing skills and those who are not yet literate or are still developing these abilities.

This distinction does not necessarily depend on age. Two children of the same age may be at very different stages of literacy development. An older child may just be beginning to read and write, while a younger child may already be able to do so independently.

For this reason, we believe assessment activities should be adapted to each child's individual learning process.

  • For children who are not yet literate or are developing literacy skills: activities should allow us to observe their Spanish knowledge without reading and writing becoming barriers to showing what they know.
  • For children who are already literate: activities can include reading and written expression, allowing us to observe how they understand and use Spanish in written form.

This approach gives every child the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through activities suited to their stage of development, regardless of age.

Level-Based Learning and Assessment Resources

At Petit Español, we create level-based learning assessments and knowledge-integration activities. These resources help children review and connect the content they have studied, while allowing families and educators to recognize learning progress and identify areas that may need further practice.

For each level, we offer two assessment formats:

  • One designed for children who are not yet literate or are still developing reading and writing skills.
  • Another designed for children who have already acquired basic reading and writing skills.

Both formats address the content covered at the corresponding level. The difference lies in how the activities are presented, so that each child can demonstrate their Spanish knowledge in a way that respects their literacy development.

Assessing Spanish Through Reading

In addition to level-based assessment resources, there is another way to explore children's Spanish knowledge: through reading, comprehension, and stories.

Storybooks provide a meaningful context for using and developing language skills. Through a story, its characters, and the activities that accompany it, children can demonstrate how they understand Spanish, interpret information, and express themselves in the language.

In the Petit Español catalog, you will find Spanish storybooks and reading materials accompanied by educational activities that support the development of different language skills.

One example is El niño de las palomas, an illustrated story in Spanish that includes reading, listening comprehension, and writing activities. It offers children another way to explore and demonstrate their Spanish knowledge through a meaningful reading experience.
